I’m a freelance photojournalist who specializes in investigations, documentary storytelling and daily assignment work. I’m currently based in New York City.

I consider myself a “true believer.” I know that independent, intelligent journalism is imperative for a free society.

I try to leave a mark on every assignment I shoot not only through the photos I deliver but also through helping guide the reporting process to show the impact on real people. I work closely with reporters and editors to make sure that we deliver journalism that is groundbreaking and impactful.

Recently, I had the opportunity to tell the story of Jannette Navarro, a 22-year-old single mother and Starbucks barista in San Diego whose hectic and unpredictable work schedule put a huge strain on her life. The story ran on A1 of The New York Times and, within hours, Starbucks promised scheduling changes for more than 130,000 employees.

It was a strong reminder to me about the power of visual storytelling and the way that images, paired with great reporting and written narrative, can make a reader confront reality and connect with a story on a human level. 

I also recently completed an in-depth project for the Center for Investigative Reporting that chronicled the "Dark Side of the Strawberry." It included a visual exploration of the farms and workers who handled a class of pesticides known as fumigants and the communities that surrounded those chemicals.

Before becoming a freelance photojournalist, I spent about five years working for the online, nonprofit news source Voice of San Diego. There, I was the sole staff photographer. I focused on documenting quality-of-life issues and underserved populations in San Diego.

I take every assignment seriously and aim to bring back an interesting picture from every situation, whether it’s as visual as a raging wildfire or as bland as a drab office portrait or building mug.
